Superbly illustrated and innovative in its approach,
Clay & Pounds Basic Clinical Massage Therapy, 3e,
helps readers build a solid foundation in palpatory and muscle
anatomy as they master clinical massage therapy techniques.
This
stunningly realistic text brings the basic techniques of clinical massage
therapy to life by embedding illustrations of internal structures directly into
photographs of live models, allowing readers to see exactly what muscle is being
worked on, where it is, where it is attached, how it can be accessed manually,
what problems it can cause, and one or more techniques for effectively treating
it. The result is a vivid representation of the individual muscles that are
essential to understanding basic clinical massage therapy
techniques.
The updated and expanded Third Edition enhances an
already impressive art program with striking new photographs and adds a range of
new pedagogical features, including learning objectives, case studies, and
icons, to provide students with more help in mastering key concepts and
skills.

Editorial Reviews
Reviewer: Michele J Renee, DC (Northwestern Health Sciences University)
Description: Although the basic anatomy this book covers hasn't changed markedly from earlier editions, the synthesis of current thinking and research in the field of massage therapy, and manual therapies in general, is an important update. This edition also offers online resources, including the book in PDF version, an image bank, PowerPoints for each chapter, and question banks and study tools for students. The previous editions were published in 2008 and 2003.
Purpose: The purpose is to integrate anatomy and clinical application of massage therapy, using an innovative approach to the illustrations and key points for palpation of structures. This is a worthy objective, because many books use the typical two-dimensional illustrations without the particular reference point of the massage therapist. The book accomplishes its purpose, providing the best illustrations I've seen. Particularly useful is the layered approach they use, including the drape, the skeletal system, and relevant soft tissue structures. Students learn about the region with the body pictured in the position that it would be treated, versus a model in anatomical position. This will be very useful for learners, and a nice complement to standard anatomy books. The accompanying website adds some useful features for both students and instructors to make studying and teaching more efficient.
Audience: This is intended for students of massage therapy, and the book would be a great classroom resource. It also could be of great use to professional massage therapists, because of its unique approach. It is thorough and complete regarding the history of massage therapy, definitions, an assessment of the evidence and current thinking in the field of manual therapies and pain theory, and relevant techniques. The authors write with great passion and insight, with a bit of a tongue-in-cheek approach that introduces some levity to learning. Their collective training, years in practice, and insight come together to create a unique perspective on a topic taught in thousands of schools around the country, making this valuable for both students and their instructors.
Features: The book primarily covers anatomy by region of the body, along with strategies for palpation and advanced massage techniques for that region. It also includes the history and terminology of massage therapy, some modalities common in the field, the latest research on theories, and basic topics in anatomy and physiology from a cellular standpoint. It is, in essence, an anatomy book with an emphasis on the detail most relevant to massage therapists. I love the innovative and creative approach to the graphics. They are well designed and accurate, with transparent layers that enable therapists to see what the body looks like layer by layer, including the drape they will be working with. Not only is this a great way to learn, but an excellent reference once therapists are out in the field.
Assessment: This is a high quality book, offering a great deal for students in clinical massage. The authors bring the topic to life, providing a unique perspective with the images and in the approach to each chapter. I especially appreciated the nod to evidence-informed practice in the first chapter, in which the authors mention and evaluate the latest research in the field and discuss how it impacts our collective thinking in how and why we do what we do. This is an important aspect, and is a huge element of this edition. The online resources add some value, with study and teaching tools for students and instructors. I have not seen other titles that accomplish quite what this book does.
